A modern replication published in PLOS ONE found a similar general curve. That supports the basic idea that forgetting can happen quickly, but it still does not turn 90 percent into a rule for normal reading.

A 2026 review from Simply Psychology makes the same distinction. The shape of the curve matters more than one exact number because meaningful information, prior knowledge, interest, review, and the way learning is tested can all change retention.

So if you finish a history book and remember more than you remember from a technical manual, nothing strange has happened. Your brain already had more ideas and stories available to connect with the history material.

The useful lesson is simple. Do not obsess over how much you forgot. Change what you do after reading so the important parts have another chance to stick.

Why Rereading Feels Better Than It Works

Rereading feels productive because the words become familiar. On the second pass, a sentence that once seemed difficult may suddenly feel obvious.

The problem is that familiarity is not the same as being able to produce the idea yourself. You can recognize a sentence while looking at the page and still struggle to explain it five minutes later.
